Serving Central New Jersey
FB Roofing & Siding installs, replaces and repairs siding for homeowners throughout Shrewsbury, the borough at the crossroads of Route 35 and Sycamore Avenue in eastern Monmouth County, bordered by Red Bank, Little Silver, Oceanport, Eatontown and Tinton Falls. This page is about Shrewsbury Borough; the much smaller Shrewsbury Township next door is a separate municipality. The borough covers 2.19 square miles, and nearly all of it is land.
Shrewsbury is a place of single homes that people stay in. About 85 percent of its houses are detached, roughly 86 percent are owner-occupied, and the median one dates to around 1969. Around that mid-century majority sits one of the oldest village centers in the county. We work in vinyl, insulated vinyl and James Hardie fiber cement, we are a James Hardie preferred contractor, and every project begins with a free written estimate.

Our siding work in Shrewsbury covers full replacement, new installation, repair of damaged panels and trim, and insulated siding upgrades, together with design work such as accent gables, board and batten and trim packages. On a traditional house the profile and the exposure matter as much as the color: a narrow clapboard-style lap reads very differently from a wide one, and the wrong proportion is what makes a re-sided older house look re-sided. It is worth holding samples against the house itself and settling those details before anything is ordered. Most homes take several days to about a week depending on size, the number of elevations, trim detailing and weather, and we confirm the schedule before work starts.
The river boroughs north and east of here spend their time fighting salt. Shrewsbury mostly does not: of its 2.19 square miles, only 0.03 is water. What wears out an exterior in this borough is quieter. It is time, shade and the moisture that mature street trees hold against a wall. North and east elevations that never fully dry are where green film and dark streaks show up first, where leaf debris sits against the bottom course, and where a limb eventually comes down on a gable in a storm.
Age is the other half. The Shrewsbury Historic District at the crossroads has been on the National Register of Historic Places since 1978 and contains 47 contributing buildings, and houses of that generation rarely wear a single layer of anything. What you see from the street may be sitting on top of earlier cladding, and the framing behind it is seldom flat or plumb. On an old house a siding estimate begins with finding out what is actually on the wall and what is under it. If your home is in the historic district, it is also worth asking the borough what review applies before you settle on a material. Where the look has to stay traditional, James Hardie fiber cement is usually the conversation: it takes and holds paint, and it comes in lap and trim that suit the wide casings and corner boards of older houses.
Most of the borough is younger than that. A house built around 1969 has almost certainly outlived its first exterior, and many are well into their second. Fading, cracking and panels that have started to bow or pull loose are the signs that the material itself is finished. When a wall is being opened for a full replacement, insulated vinyl is worth pricing next to standard vinyl, because it reduces thermal bridging and cuts heating and cooling load on a house built to the insulation standards of its time. Before any number is quoted we look at the sheathing behind the panels, because a wall that has stayed damp in the shade for years can hide soft sheathing that changes the job.
Very few homes here sit empty — the vacancy rate is about 2 percent — so a siding decision in Shrewsbury is nearly always being made by someone who intends to live with it. That is a reason to be straight about scope. Isolated damage on siding that is otherwise sound is a repair, and we will tell you so. A patch on a long plain wall whose color has faded for twenty years is something else, because the new panels will not disappear into the old ones, and you should know that before you pay for it.
If the project goes beyond the walls, our roofing work in Shrewsbury and our gutter services come from the same company, and under this much tree cover the gutters and the siding are really one drainage problem. Our siding pages for neighboring Little Silver and Oceanport cover the boroughs on Shrewsbury’s eastern border. Compare materials on our siding installation and replacement page, then call for a free written estimate and tell us roughly when the house was built.
Usually, yes. The look of a traditional house comes from its proportions: the width of each course, the size of the corner boards and the casings around the windows. James Hardie fiber cement lap and trim can be laid out to those proportions and painted, and vinyl is made in clapboard-style profiles as well. We sort out profile, exposure and trim at the estimate, before a color is chosen.
Not by itself. On a shaded wall it is usually growth on the surface of panels that are still sound, which is a cleaning problem. Cracked, brittle or bowing panels, loose courses and soft trim are the signs of real failure. The two call for different responses, and they are quick to tell apart in person.
If the rest of the wall is sound, a repair is often the right answer, and we will say so. The limit is appearance: new panels next to siding that has weathered for decades may not match, especially on a plain front wall.
Most homes are completed in several days to about a week, depending on size, elevations, trim and weather. The estimate is free and written.
